BATON ROUGE, La. — After a banner spring season athletically, 64 LSU student-athletes were named to the 2015 Southeastern Conference Spring Honor Roll the league announced today, paced by the men’s and women’s track & field teams that combined to place 27 on the list.
Leading the way as a squad with 16 total selections, the Lady Tigers completed the 2015 outdoor season with an 11th place finish at the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., earlier this month earning 26 points, with 15 of those coming from underclassmen. One of those underclassmen was sophomore jumper Nataliyah Friar who earned All-America honors after placing sixth in the triple jump, clearing 43 feet, 8-1/2 inches on her final jump of the competition.
Piling up 45 team points at the national meet, the LSU men’s track & field team finished fourth as the Tigers earned a top five finish for the 14th time in 16 years, while extending their NCAA-record streak of top 10 national finishes to 18. One of the cogs in the team’s placing was senior sprinter Joshua Thompson, earning All-America honors as an individual by finishing fourth in the 110-meter hurdles, while running the lead-off leg of the bronze medal-winning 4×100-meter relay team.
After claiming the program’s 16th conference championship, winning a nation’s-best 54 games and earning its second trip to the College World Series in the last three seasons, the LSU baseball team had eight of its players named to the honor roll. Of the eight, five were drafted by Major League Baseball clubs in Andrew Stevenson, Kade Scivicque, Mark Laird, Zac Person and Andrew Stevenson, as the quintet combined for four All-America honors and five All-SEC selections.
With 50-plus wins, the longest winning streak and best start for any program at LSU in team history, LSU’s softball Tigers earned their second Women’s College World Series berth in the last four years in 2015, wrapping up the year also placing eight on the SEC’s academic list. Wrapping up her senior season with a perfect 4.0 GPA, utility player Dylan Supak became the first player to be a CoSIDA Academic All-American in program history, going on to earn the Elite 89 Award which honors the student-athlete with the highest overall grade point average at each of the NCAA’s 89 championships.
Bringing home the department’s 47th national championship, LSU men’s golf had six honorees after winning the first title for the program in over 50 years this past spring. All-Americans Brandon Pierce and Zach Wright were among the selections, along with fellow senior Ben Taylor, who clinched the deciding point in both the national semifinal and national championship.
Madalene Sagstrom highlighted the women’s five honor roll recipients, as the All-American hailing from Sweden was the SEC Player of the Year and the Louisiana Player of the Year, along with fellow All-American and Norwegian-born Caroline Nistrup and honorable mention selection Elise Bradley.
The final ten selections came from the court as the Tigers and Lady Tigers tennis teams had five per side. For the men, All-American Jordan Daigle finished the year with a 21-10 doubles record with teammate Boris Arias, while Joana Vale Costa helped lead LSU to the second round of the team tournament, while also qualifying for the singles championships.
