Lady Tigers Set Records on Day 2 at Golf Classic

BATON ROUGE – The LSU women’s golf team more than lived up to its No. 6 national Golfstat ranking Saturday afternoon at the University Club on what was a record-setting second round of the three-day event.

Under ideal conditions, the Lady Tigers posted single-round team marks for 18 and 36 holes and in the process opened up the team lead from three shots to 13 shots going to the 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on Sunday that Coach Karen Bahnsen hopes will give her team its third team win of the 2014-15 calendar season and the first at the University Club since 2005.

Also, Sweden senior Madelene Sagstrom of LSU made it a record tying and breaking day of her own as she surged to the individual lead after 36 holes in search of her first win on her home course after finishing third as a freshman and second the last two years (losing on the first hole of a playoff a year ago).

LSU posted a play 5, count 4 score of 8-under par 280 on Saturday to post the lowest women’s collegiate score at the Club since the renovation which toughened and changed the design of the course in 2010. Prior to Saturday, only once when Arkansas shot 287 in the 3rd round of the 2011 Classic, has any women’s team shot under par in a team round on the renovated layout.

But LSU obliterated that mark and it was a round that had the team excelling from start to finish. LSU had 24 birdies on its five team cards and just 12 counting scores above par. The wind didn’t play a factor into the round as it did on Friday with tricky crosswinds and the Lady Tigers showed they knew all the little tricks about the U-Club layout.

The patience of Friday and the momentum gained at the end of the round turned into successful, aggressive play on Saturday

“Because it was so difficult, everyone was like if the wind doesn’t blow, we can do this,” said Bahnsen. “We are just worrying about what we know we need to concentrate on. We are not paying attention to all the outside stuff and that’s really hard to do in golf. The girls really are staying within themselves. Just go out and play our game and not scoreboard watch. It sounds so simple but it’s hard to do.”

Sagstrom, with family here for her final regular season senior event, had seven birdies on her round and has played the par 4 holes in -3 and the par 5s in -4 thru two rounds. Saturday she posted birdies on the first three par 5s and posted four par 4 birdies in her 5-under 67.

That round tied the 18-hole individual score since renovation set originally by Kailey Walsh of Georgia in the second round of the 2013 Classic.

“I hit my irons a lot better,” said Sagstrom after the round. “I was closer to the pin and made more birdies today. The course is in great shape. I was so proud of them for making it this good. The wind helps. A lot of low scores today, so that’s good. I feel like we’ve been handling ourselves very well. We’re not frustrated, we just keep going. It’s our home course and we know where we can get some shots and where we need to calm down. It’s proving how much this group has grown and how well we can play.”

Ironically, Sagstrom’s 36-hole total of 4-under 140 (73-67), tops the U-Club post-renovation total of 142 set by Sagstrom in her freshman season of 2012.

LSU has posted rounds of 297-280 for a 36-hole total of 577 (1-over) and that is 10 shots better than the previous 36 hole mark of 587 set by LSU and Tennessee in the 2012 Classic.

Tulane is second at 590 (14-over par) after an even par round of 288 (302 in opening round). The Green Wave had its round under par until right at the end of Saturday’s trek around the par 72, 6,251 yard layout. Mississippi State, finishing earlier, actually was the first to break 287 with a 3-under 285 and is third at 15-over 591 (306-285).

Those three teams will play in the final wave of the shotgun start on the opening three holes to start Sunday’s play.

TCU dropped from second to fourth (598, +22) and Notre Dame (7 to 5, +28) and Colorado (11 to 6, +31, tied with North Carolina (8-to-6) were the big movers in the second round.

Sagstrom has familiar company on the leaderboard as teammate Elise Bradley, the junior from Mandeville, birdied five holes on the final nine to post a 4-under 68 and is 2-under 142 (74-68). Sagstrom has already shared a co-championship with a Lady Tiger, as she shared the title at the Sugar Bowl with sophomore Caroline Nistrup.

Speaking of Nistrup, she is tied for ninth at 2-over 146 after rounds of 75-71 and Carly Ray Goldstein is tied for 18th at 7-over 151 after rounds of 75-76. Nadine Dreher had the day’s other counting round after shooting 2-over 74.

Bradley was tied for second in par 3 scoring for two rounds at 2-under par and tied with Sagstrom on par 4 scoring at -3. Sagstrom is second in birdies with 10 for two days with Bradley right behind her with nine.

The course played some 2.25 strokes easier on Saturday but still gave up some big scores as the 89-player field posted a 76.94 average. But there were two eagles on Saturday by Madison Opfer of Tulane and Kelly McGovern of TCU.

Behind the two LSU players in the individual hunt are Leslie Cloots in third at 143 (-1, 72-71) and Gemma Dryburgh and Emily Penttila of Tulane along with Chieh Jessica Peng of Mississippi State are in a group tied for fourth at 144.
