SAN ANTONIO – LSU sophomore golfer Caroline Nistrup had a co-tournament high eight birdies on Sunday in the first round of The Alamo Invitational as she became the fourth player in school women’s history to post a 6-under round.
Nistrup of Denmark posted 66 to stand in second place after one round of the 54-hole event, one shot behind first round leader Sophia Schubert of Auburn at 7-under 65. A total of 23 golfers posted under par round as the par 72 Briggs Ranch course again surrendered a set of low numbers.
Included in those under par rounds was senior Madelene Sagstrom of LSU at 3-under 69 and junior Elise Bradley had a 1-under 71.
LSU as a team posted a strong 9-under par round of 279 on the opening day, four shots behind the first-place tie of Arkansas and Auburn at 13-under par 275. After LSU it is four shots back to Texas A&M at 5-under 283 with Florida State the last under par team in fifth at 2-under 286.
Nistrup was actually 1-over on her round after opening with five pars and a bogey on the sixth hole. After a par on the seventh hole came an amazing 10-hole stretch from the eighth to 17th hole when she had eight birdies and two pars before bogeying the 18th hole to close out the round at 6-under 66.
Ironically, Nistrup played the par 3s in 2-under, the par 4s in 2-under and the par 5s in 2-under par. Nistrup led the tournament in par 3 scoring.
Sagstrom is in a group tied for eighth while Bradley is tied for 16th. Carly Goldstein had a good round as well as LSU’s fourth counting score at 1-over par 73.
