BATON ROUGE — The Florida men’s swimming and diving team (2-1, 1-1 SEC) won 11 events en route to a 160-136 victory over LSU (1-3, 0-3 SEC) Thursday in the LSU Natatorium.
“We knew coming into the meet that is was going to be a tough competition,” co-head coach David Geyer said. “We were going against one of the top teams in the country, we’re in the middle of a training cycle and it was a Thursday meet.
“All in all, the times and performances were where we expected them to be. The one think lacking was the mental edge and approach to the competition, which will be addressed. We are looking forward to our mid-season meet in two weeks to allow our team to rest a bit.”
Sophomore Andrei Tuomola led the Tigers in defeat with a pair of individual victories. The Haarajoki, Finland, product swept the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle with times of 20.75 seconds and 45.71, respectively.
Senior Hannes Heyl, freshman diver Daniel Helm and the 200 freestyle relay foursome of Heyl, Tuomola, Eric Zeller and Martin Jungfleisch also delivered wins on the afternoon.
Heyl remained perfect on the season in the 100 butterfly, racing to victory with a mark of 49.23. The German also spearheaded the Tigers’ victorious effort in the 200 free relay (1:22.16) with a season-best lead-off split of 20.46.
Helm posted his strongest effort in the three-meter, holding off teammate Brian Gemberling with a career-high score of 346.50, ninth in school history. Gemberling was second with a 346.19 score, while freshman Sean McKinney qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving Regional with a career best of 324.37.
LSU returns to action in two weeks when both teams travel to Houston to take part in the Cougar Classic Fall Invitational, beginning Nov. 18.
