Illness Delays Start of NCAA Men’s Swimming & Diving

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Following a day in which 18 student-athletes and one coach were hospitalized with a gastrointestinal illness, the NCAA has postponed the 2010 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships one day.

The meet, which was originally scheduled to commence Thursday at 11 a.m. (CDT), will now begin Friday at 11 a.m. and run through Sunday night at Ohio State’s McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.

Coaches from participating schools were informed of the NCAA’s decision Wednesday night.

“We are not sure what caused it (illness), but it did not come from the pool facility or host venue,” said Dr. Chris Kaeding, Ohio State’s head team physician. “We are taking extra measures of additional cleansing of the pool.”

LSU men’s swimmers Hannes Heyl, James Meyers, Sean LeNeave, Andrei Tuomola and Craig Hamilton have made the trip and will represent the Tigers at the meet.
