BATON ROUGE – In what has grown into an annual event, members of the LSU track and field program were honored for their outstanding performance in the classroom once again at the 2010 Tiger Athletic Foundation Academic Excellence Gala held at the LSU Stadium Club on Sunday evening.
Former Lady Tiger Andrea Linton was honored as one of seven recipients of the Bengal Belles Academic Excellence Award that recognizes student-athletes who have risen to the next level by completing their undergraduate degree and pursuing a master’s degree while still competing for LSU.
Linton, a four-time All-America performer in the long jump and triple jump during her career from 2005-09, earned her undergraduate degree in mass communication in August 2008 and is now working toward a master’s degree in journalism from the Manship School of Mass Communication at LSU.
A native of Montego Bay, Jamaica, Linton concluded her collegiate career in 2009 with an appearance in the NCAA Indoor Championships in which she earned All-America honors with a fifth-place finish in the triple jump. She finished with career bests of 20-10 ½ in the long jump and 44-6 ¼ in the triple jump.
As part of Sunday’s festivities, redshirt sophomore distance runner Ken Ehrhardt was one of three athletes to receive the Wally Pontiff, Jr. Academic Excellence Award for premier performance in the classroom.
A native of New Orleans, Ehrhardt was honored for maintaining a cumulative 3.95 grade-point average in biological sciences in two seasons as a member of the LSU track and field program.
The Tiger Athletic Foundation also presented 35 track and field athletes with the LSU Director’s Cup and 34 as members of the SEC Academic Honor Roll in 2009 for their pursuit of excellence in the classroom for the 2008-09 academic season. All awards presented to LSU student-athletes at Sunday’s gala were due to their performance both on and off the track in 2008-09.
