BATON ROUGE — The LSU men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams dominated the 1999 SEC Swimming & Diving Academic Honor Roll released Friday, placing 26 student-athletes on the list.
Thirteen Lady Tigers were honored for their academic prowess, more than any other SEC institution. Thirteen Tigers were also honored, tying Georgia for the most men’s honorees.
“This is a great honor,” LSU head coach Rick Meador said. “We pride ourselves in having true student-athletes at LSU. Our young men and women don’t forget the student part of that title. I’m glad they are being recognized for all of their hard work in the classroom.”
A list of the Lady Tigers who were honored follows, with each major in parentheses: Marguerite Atchley (mass communication), Katie Burke (mass communication), Carly Farrell (psychology), Kelli Klein (zoology), Melissa Knox (kinesiology), Mandy Leach (undecided), Ashley Marxen (undecided), Katy McBride (undecided), Lindsey Mooney (undecided), Gretchen Mury (marketing), Shannon O’Neal (undecided), Mandy Robie (mass communication) and Kristin Schlipf (kinesiology).
The Tigers who were honored were: Kevin Ayer (mechanical engineering), Chip Bankston (zoology), Brian Baum (kinesiology), Luke Duvall (microbiology), Jason Goltz (economics), Carlton Greer (undecided), Jeff Maynor (chemical engineering), Stephen Naremore (undecided), Erik Petursson (marketing), Neal Satterly (microbiology), Moran Sommerfeld (agricultural business), Tommy Starkweather (information systems and decision sciences) and Will Tanner (civil engineering).
To be eligible for the SEC Academic Honor Roll, a student-athlete must meet three criteria. First, the student-athlete must have a cumulative 3.0 grade point average or have a 3.0 GPA for the past year. Second, the student-athlete must be a sophomore or higher in terms of academic classification. Third, the student-athlete must have 24 semester hours toward a degree.
The SEC Championships will be held February 17-20 at Lexington, Kentucky. The LSU men will arrive in Lexington with a No. 19 national ranking and a 9-3 dual meet record. The Lady Tigers are 11-2 overall.
