Stephanie Hastings enters her second season as the Tigers’ volunteer assistant coach. A four-year starter at catcher, shortstop and second base, Hastings assists with the infield and with various other duties.

In 2002, LSU led the SEC in fielding percentage and ranked 11th nationally with a school-record .971 percentage. Second baseman April Janzen and shortstop Blair Smith each ranked third in the league in fielding percentage at their respective positions and catcher Jennie Reeves ranked fifth.

“Stephanie was one of those ‘once in a lifetime’ athletes that you come across in coaching that you wish you could keep forever,” said head coach Yvette Girouard. “Her trademark was being totally committed to being the best player she could be on the field everyday. As a coach, she has been a great bridge between the coaching staff and the players.”

The Houston, Texas, native was a 2000 First-Team All-America selection at second base and was named to three NCAA Regional All-Tournament teams. In addition, she was a three-time All-South Region, All-Louisiana and All-SEC selection. From 1999-2001, she was a member of three straight SEC Championship teams and also claimed two SEC Tournament titles.

The SEC career record holder for sacrifices, Hastings also ranks fourth in the league in career hits with 288 and doubles with 53. She has one of the top career fielding percentages in SEC history at catcher, second base and shortstop. She had one of her best seasons at the plate as a senior, when she batted .372 with 81 hits, 16 doubles and a career-high six home runs.

The 22-year-old earned her bachelor’s degree from LSU in kinesiology in 2001.
