BATON ROUGE – The LSU softball team fell to No. 25 Duke Friday night 8-4 in the Tiger Classic. The Tigers move to 1-1 on the season while Duke moves to 2-0.
LSU continues play in the Tiger Classic tomorrow where they’ll take on Kansas at 7 p.m. the game will be available on SEC Network and via live stats.
The Tigers fell behind early, 8-0, due to some miscues in the field. Duke capitalized on those errors and forced starter Ali Kilponen out of the circle. The Tigers went to Shelby Wickersham the rest of the way, who allowed two runs.
Amanda Doyle got things started for the Tigers in the fourth with a single up the middle with two outs. Georgia Clark drew a walk to put runners on first and second, and Shelbi Sunseri blasted a three-run home run over the left-center wall to put the Tigers on the board, 8-3.
In the bottom of the fifth Doyle launched a solo dinger down the left field line but it wasn’t enough to close the gap on Duke, falling in their second game of the season.
Kilponen took the loss in the circle for the Tigers moving to 0-1 on the season. Wickersham tallied five strikeouts.
Doyle went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Sunseri went 1-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored.
