Softball Signs Six For 2022 Season

BATON ROUGE – As the fall comes to a close, LSU softball and head coach Beth Torina announce the signing of six during 2020 Signing Day. All will be freshman and eligible for the 2021-22 academic year.

Extra Inning Softball ranked the Tigers’ class as No. 6 in the country as all signees are ranked in the Top 100 Prospect rankings.

The Tigers signed Baylea Brandon (Leander, Texas), Raelin Chaffin (Bossier City, La.), Madilyn Giglio (Metairie, La.), Kaylen Madrey (Newnan, Ga.), McKenzie Redoutey (Franklin, N.C.) and Sydney Peterson (Stockton, Calif.).

“We are extremely excited to celebrate these young women today,” said Torina. “Throughout all the challenges this year, these athletes have remained committed to excellence. They have continually found ways to push themselves to improve and prepare for the day they will take the field as Tigers.

“We are very proud of the type of athletes they are, but even more so the character and strength they will bring to our program. This is a great day for the Tigers.”

Brandon, who comes in as a utility, will join the Tigers from Leander, Texas. Extra Inning Softball ranks Brandon as the 27th best player in the 2021 class in the 23rd at her position. In 2018, she was ranked the 32nd overall in the FloSoftball rankings.

At Leander High School, she hit .500 as a junior and belted out 11 home runs and 10 doubles before the season was cut short due to the pandemic. In her freshman and sophomore seasons, she earned First Team All-District, All-District Offensive MVP, First Team All-Academic and All-State honors, earning second team her freshman year and first team in her sophomore season. 

For the Texas Bombers Gold, she helped the team to the Texas Gold Cup and hit 18 home runs this summer. In 2019, she helped them finish 5th at the Triple Crown and hit 15 home runs on the summer. 

Chaffin, a pitcher from Bossier City, Louisiana, will join the Tigers in the fall of 2020. She is the 14th best player by Extra Inning Softball and the ninth best pitcher in the country. 

For Airline High School, she is a two-time Pitcher of the Year honoree to go along with First Team All-State, Defensive MVP, First Team All-District and First Team All-City. She led her team to a semifinal finish as a sophomore, recording 274 strikeouts with a 0.85 earned run average. She finished with a 21-3 record with 141 innings pitched. As a freshman, she led the team to the state quarterfinals and finished her rookie campaign with 272 strikeouts in 153 innings pitched with a 1.05 ERA and a 21-4 record.

For the past two summers, Chaffin played for the Texas Glory-Shelton. In the summer of 2017 and 2018, she played summer ball for the Impact Gold-Jackson and won the USA Elite tournament in Kansas City, Missouri in 2017.

Giglio, an outfielder from Metairie, Louisiana, will join the Tigers in the fall of 2021. She is ranked 53rd in the nation and 24th at her position by Extra Inning Softball.

Due to the pandemic, her junior season at Mount Carmel Academy was cut short but as a sophomore, she hit .520 with 26 stolen bases. In her freshman season, she hit .463 at the plate and stole a total of 24 bases on the year. She is a two-time all-district and all-state performer to go along with all-metro in her sophomore season.

Giglio played for the EC Bullets summer program and hit .392 with 44 stolen bases and 17 extra base hits this past summer. In the summer of 2019, she helped her team to the TCS/USA 16U National Championship and was the No. 1 ranked club team. She hit .409 that summer with 30 extra base hits and 59 stolen bases.

She is a three-time honor roll student and plans to major in pre-med or kinesiology.

Madrey, an infielder, joins the Tigers from Newnan, Georgia. She is the 24th overall best player by Extra Inning Softball and the 20th best at her position.

At Newnan High School, she earned all-state in her first three seasons and all-region all four seasons. As a senior, she hit .588 with 28 stolen bases, 18 RBI, five triples and two home runs. Also hit .588 as a junior with 26 stolen bases, eight doubles, five triples, three home runs, 26 RBI and 47 runs scored.

Madrey is a three-time honor student and also plays basketball and is a part of the track and field team. Played for the Birmingham Thunderbolts the past two summers and won USA Nationals this past summer. She plans to major pharmacy.

Redoutey, an outfielder from Franklin, North Carolina, will join the Tigers in the fall of 2021. Extra Inning Softball ranked her the 10th best player in the nation and the fourth best outfielder.

At Franklin High School, her team was ranked 10th in the nation a senior and 11th as a junior. She was an all-conference performer as a sophomore and earned all-state, all-district, all-conference and all-region honors as a freshman. In her freshman year, her team was the state runner up.

For the past four summers, Redoutey has played for the Georgia Impact program. She is a three-time Honor Society member and plans to major in business education.

Peterson, an infielder from Stockton, California, is ranked 35th among the nation by Extra Inning Softball and 31st at her position.

She is a two-time first team all-league performer at Franklin High School in California. She also is a two-time Defensive Player of the Year. As a sophomore, she batted .486 with 22 runs scored, 10 RBI, four home runs and a .945 slugging percentage. In her freshman campaign, she hit .628 with 31 runs scored, 25 RBI and a 1.162 slugging percentage.

For the past two summers, Peterson has played for Sorcerer Old Skool program. He father Denny played baseball at Northwest Missouri State. She is a four-time honor roll student and plans to major in pre-med.
