Hobbs Wins 100m Dash Title at USATF Championships

Des Moines, Iowa Aleia Hobbs sprinted down the straightaway at Drake Stadium in 10.91 seconds to claim her first career USATF outdoor national title on Friday night.

“It’s an amazing feeling,” Hobbs said on the podium after the race. “This season was the best season I’ve had in my life. To finish it out with this title is just a blessing.”

Racing in a final of five collegians and three professionals, Hobbs was the class of the field per usual. She outran Ashley Henderson (10.96) of San Diego State and Jenna Prandini (10.98) of PUMA for the national title. Sliding in right behind the third spot was Mikiah Brisco with a time of 11.10 to place fourth. With the win, Hobbs becomes the first collegian to claim the U.S. national title in the 100 meter dash since 1991 when Carlette Guidry (Texas) accomplished the feat.

Hobbs advanced to the final by clocking times of 10.97 on Thursday before running a wind-legal season best of 10.89 on Friday in the semifinals. Brisco advanced to the finals by clocking at time of 11.13 on Thursday in the first round and a 11.04 in the semifinals. Hobbs and Brisco combined to win six national titles throughout their careers in the Purple and Gold. Brisco was the 2017 NCAA 100 meter dash champion, and she also won 4×100 meter relay national titles in 2016 and 2018. Hobbs won all three of her national titles during the 2018 season. She won her first one in March at the NCAA indoor championships in the 60 meter dash. She then won her final two during outdoors by winning the 100 meter dash and 4×100 meter relay in early June.

The four-day U.S. meet continues on Saturday. Former 400 meter superstar Michael Cherry advanced to the finals of the 400 meter dash with the top time in the prelims, a 44.87, which was a season best; he will run in the finals at 4:30 p.m. CT on Saturday. Jasmine Stowers will attempt to advance to the finals of the 100 meter hurdles on Saturday; she runs in the semifinals at 2:20 p.m. CT Saturday. Kymber Payne and Cassondra Tate will run in the semifinals of the 400 meter hurdles on Saturday (3:03 p.m. CT), while Brisco, Kortnei Johnson, Kimberlyn Duncan and Jada Martin will run in the first round of the 200 meter dash that is scheduled to begin at 1:35 p.m. CT. Charlene Lipsey registered a time of 2:00.25 in her 800 meter run semifinal to advance to Sunday’s final at 3:04 p.m. CT.
