HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The LSU women’s golf team is back in action starting Friday at the fifth Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at the Pete Dye Course of the Long Cove Club.
The tournament has quickly grown to one of the best at this time of the year as the country star usually has a mini-concert for the teams before they tee off.
LSU sophomore Sydney Cavin of Baton Rouge comes in off her first individual win of her college career at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate posting a score of 5-under par 211 over the always tricky English Turn layout in New Orleans. Cavin had bookend rounds of 69 to go with a middle day score of 73 to tie for the individual title. She showed her nerve by going back onto the final fairway to complete her round after a later weather delay threatened to wipe out all her work as she rallied from seventh to the title in the final 18 holes.
LSU has fared well in this event since its first appearance in the 2013 event. The Lady Tigers finished tied for second in 2013 with former Lady Tiger Madelene Sagstrom finishing second individually. In 2014, LSU finished in a tie for third with presently rehabbing Lady Tiger Caroline Nistrup losing in a playoff for the title.
Last year, LSU tied for second in the event and Sagstrom lost in a playoff after shooting 6-under in the 54-hole event.
Joining LSU and host South Carolina in the event are Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Duke, Furman, Georgia Kentucky, Mississippi State, North Carolina, Oklahoma State, Southern California, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Virginia and Wake Forest. Southern Cal is the consensus No. 1 with Duke at 2, Arkansas at 3 and Alabama at No. 4 in Golfstat.
The Long Cove Club course is set up at par 71 and 6,208 with only three par fives as the course plays to a par of 36.
Cavin will be joined in the LSU lineup by seniors Elise Bradley and Nadine Dreher, junior Carly Goldstein and freshman Kathleen Gallagher.
LSU will go up in the final wave of the back nine, starting at 9:10 a.m. CT. The first wave goes off at 7:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday at 7 a.m. on Sunday.
