SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The fall season for the LSU women’s golf team hopes to conclude starting on Sunday at The Alamo Invitational at the Briggs Ranch Golf Club.
The actual start of the tournament was still to be determined Saturday morning as the heavy rains in Texas cancelled the practice round and the chance for the teams to play the golf course. The tournament is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. with tee times off both the first and 10th tees on Sunday. A decision was expected to possibly shotgun start the field to get everyone on the course at the same time.
The Briggs course has taken a lot of water and it will make the tournament, which has been primarily a low-scoring event, play on a course that will have to play longer. The Lady Tigers are the defending champion in the tournament with a -23 score of 841. Auburn’s Sophia Schubert won the event at 12-under 204.
With the cancellation of the practice round, only two of the Lady Tigers will have played in the event (seniors Elise Bradley and Nadine Dreher). Bradley finished -6 and T4 with then senior Madelene Sagstrom a year ago. Junior Caroline Nistrup finished second a year ago in the tournament at 11-under par, but will miss the event after suffering a minor injury in the previous tournament at North Carolina.
The tournament runs through Tuesday with as of now 18 holes scheduled each day. While the forecast calls for heavy rain in San Antonio all day Saturday, the forecast for Sunday should allow for golf if the course is playable.
Along with Bradley and Dreher, the Lady Tigers will go with freshman Kathleen Gallagher and Marina Hedlund along with sophomore Sydney Cavin.
Bradley is averaging 73.67 through the first nine rounds of the season (second on the team) with Gallagher averaging a good 74.00 in her first campaign and Dreher 74.56.
Joining host Texas-San Antonio and LSU in the event are Arkansas, Texas A&M, Florida, Texas Tech, Houston, SMU, Baylor, Mississippi State, Oklahoma, TCU, Texas State, Tulane and Wisconsin.
Live scoring will be available at LSUsports.net through Birdiefire.com and updates at www.Facebook.com/LSUwomensgolf and @LSUwomensgolf on Twitter and Instagram.
