HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — Madelene Sagstrom shot 3-under-par 68 and Carly Ray Goldstein fired 1-under 71 on Saturday, as the No. 7-ranked LSU women’s golf team crept within one shot of the lead through two rounds of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate.
The Lady Tigers stand in second place at 9-over-par 577, one shot behind Duke for the overall lead. LSU posted a second round of 2-over par 286 to follow up Friday’s 7-over 291. Duke was at 1-under 283 for the day, the best on the course to move from third to first with Southern Cal posting 12-over 296 to drop to third. Mississippi State is another 10 shots back in fourth at 23-over 591. With South Carolina in fifth at 24-over 592, the top five teams are all ranked in the nine in the Golfstat rankings.
Duke is No. 6, LSU No. 8 (No. 7 in Golfweek/Sagarin), Southern Cal No. 3, Miss. State No. 9 and South Carolina No. 2.
Sagstrom, looking to possibly win back-to-back events, had five birdies on the afternoon, including four in the final seven holes in her 3-under round. Sagstrom has had nine birdies in two rounds, second in the field. Goldstein had three birdies in her 1-under round.
Sagstrom with rounds of 71-68 is at 3-under 139 in second place, just one shot behind Duke’s Leona Maguire who had a 6-under 65 to set the competitive course record women at the Long Cove Club. Caroline Nistrup had a 4-over 75 on the second day of the event and is at 4-over 146 (71-75) and is in a group tied for ninth place.
Goldstein’s round of 70 leaves her at 6-over 148 and moved her up 42 places in the standings to a tie for 21st. LSU also had 74s from Elise Bradley and Nadine Dreher. Bradley is also in 21st place in the individual competition.
The final round is set for Sunday beginning at 7 a.m. CT and LSU, Duke and Southern California will play in the final wave which will tee off No. 1 in the final wave beginning at 8:30 a.m.
