BATON ROUGE – On a day when the scores took a completely opposite turn for many teams, the LSU women’s golf team continued to find the shots needed to go low, posting the best round of the day to go to the lead after 36 holes of The Alamo Invitational at the Briggs Ranch course.
LSU posted 4-under par 284, following Sunday’s 9-under 279 and moved from third to first at 13-under par 563. The Lady Tigers are four shots up on Arkansas (275-292, 567) with Auburn in third at 6-under 570 (275-295). Florida State in fourth is the only other team in the field under par after 36 holes at 1-under 575 (286-289).
Tulane was the only other team to shoot under par on Tuesday, scoring a 1-under 287 for 3-over 579 in sixth place.
Not only do the Lady Tigers have the lead in the team event, but also in the individual competition with three golfers in the top four – including sophomore Caroline Nistrup who also moved into the lead in the second round of play. Nistrup posted a 2-under par 70 to go with her first-round 66 to stand at 8-under par 136. She is three-shots up on Gaby Lopez of Arkansas and Sophia Schubert of Auburn at 5-under 139. Lopez shot 68-71 and Schubert, the first round leader shot 65-74.
In the group tied for fourth are senior Madelene Sagstrom and junior Elise Bradley. Sagstrom had a 1-under 71 on Monday to go with a 3-under 69 in the first round for 4-under 140, while Bradley got to that number with rounds of 71-69. Lydia Gumm of Florida State is also tied for fourth at that 140 number.
Last year, then senior Lindsay Gahm of LSU won the individual title with a total score of 11-under par 205.
Carly Goldstein again had a counting score for LSU with a 2-over 74 and is at 3-over 147 after 36 holes and in a large group tied for 30th.
LSU in the tournament is 9-under on the par 5 holes and the five players have combined for 33 birdies in the first two rounds of the event.
The Lady Tigers will be looking for their first two tournament title since the 2012 NCAA West Regional.
The final round will be an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start with LSU playing again with Arkansas and Auburn. Live scoring will be at LSUsports.net through Birdiefire.com and updates on Facebook at www.Facebook.com/LSUwomensgolf and Twitter @LSUwomensgolf.
