FRANKLIN, Tenn. – The LSU women’s golf team opened the 2014-15 season with a solid second place finish in the Mason Rudolph Classic Sunday on the South Course at the Vanderbilt Legends Club.
LSU, ranked 24th in the pre-season selection by Golfweek writers, posted rounds of 285-292-298 to finish the first tournament of the season at 11-over par 875. Host Vanderbilt captured the title with a 54-hole total of even par 864 (288-283-293). The Lady Tigers were five shots clear of third-place Mississippi State at 16-over 880 (292-292-296). Auburn and GRU-Augusta tied for fourth at 21-over 885.
Even more impressive was that the Lady Tigers had three golfers finish in the top 10 and four in the top 17 in the individual competition.
LSU All-SEC senior Madelene Sagstrom finished the 54 holes at 1-over par 217 (71-69-77) to finish in a tie for seventh place, six shots out of the top spot won by Jenny Hahn of host Vanderbilt at 5-under 211 (72-68-71).
Junior Elise Bradley and sophomore Caroline Nistrup both earned 10th place finishes at 3-over 219. Bradley had a 73 Sunday to go with 68-78 while Nistrup posted 77 after rounds of 72-70.
Sophomore Carly Ray Goldstein had the best round of the final day for LSU at even par 72 and finished in a group tied for 17th at 6-over par 222 (74-76-72).
It was the 11th career top 10 finish at LSU for Sagstrom, the fifth for Nistrup and the first for Bradley.
LSU’s five players played the par 4 holes on the course the best of any of the teams at 15-over par and was tied for third in par 5 scoring at even par. LSU was second in total birdies with 45 and Carly Ray Goldstein had the only eagle in the competition. Sagstrom was second best in the tournament on par 5 holes at 5-under par. Bradley was LSU’s best on the par 4 holes at 1-over. Sagstrom had a team-best 13 birdies in the 54-holes while Goldstein had 10, with Nistrup making the most pars at 40.
