YORK, England – The Austria team, with sophomore LSU golfer Nadine Dreher on the squad, upset the top-seeded Denmark team Thursday in the quarterfinal round of the European Women’s Amateur Team Championships at the Fulford Golf Course.
Austria won the match, made up of two foursome matches and five singles matches, over Denmark, the top qualifier by 31 strokes, 4-3. Dreher and Fanny Wolte of Austria won one of the foursome matches 5&3 over Nicole Broch Larsen and Malene Krolboll. LSU’s freshman to be Caroline Nistrup of Denmark was a 5&4 winner over Wolte in a singles match.
Austria will face Finland in one semifinal after Finland was a 4-3 winner over Sweden.
LSU junior Madelene Sagstrom split her two matches in the contest against Finland. Sagstrom teamed with Johanna Tillstrom for a 2UP win over Oona Vartiainen and Annika Nykanen. Vartiainen and Sagstrom both finished at the top of the individual competition at 8-under par for 36 holes in the team qualifying. Sagstrom lost her singles match, 1UP, to Krista Bakker.
In the semifinals on Friday, Dreher will face Vartiainen in one of the singles match. In the consolation match between Denmark and Sweden, Nistrup and Sagstrom will meet in the final singles match of the contest.
