BATON ROUGE – The eighth-ranked Arkansas Razorbacks completed a wire-to-wire sweep of the team championship of the 2013 LSU Tiger Golf Classic Sunday at a wind-blown University Club.
The Razorbacks posted the co-second low team score of the day of 21-over 309 to finish the 54 hole event at 35-over 899. They remained 10-shots to the good over Tulane, who finished second at 45-over 909 (298-302-309). It was three shots back to LSU at 48-over 912 (306-294-312).
It marks the second time in three years that Arkansas has won the LSU Tiger Golf Classic, making them the eighth team in the 32-year history of the program to have multiple team wins.
Emily Tubert of Arkansas won the individual competition by posting three-straight rounds of even par 72 to finish at even par 216. Tubert put herself in great position with birdies on three of her first five holes to go to 3-under for the tournament and was able to weather the conditions for a five-shot win.
Maribel Lopez Porras of Tulane and Madelene Sagstrom of LSU tied for second at 5-over par 221. For Sagstrom, it marked the second straight tournament in which she has finished tied for second after finishing second in the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate. Sagstrom moved from ninth place to a tie for second in the final round, finishing at 5-over par 221. Sagstrom had rounds of 78-68-75, while Porras, who was in fifth place entering the day, had rounds of 71-74-76.
Sagstrom led the tournament in birdies with 13 over the three rounds.
LSU on the day counted rounds of 76 by Elise Bradley, an 80 by Ali Lucas and an 81 by Nadine Dreher. Second-round co-leader Lindsay Gahm struggled in the early going, as did all of the second-round leaders but still finished with a strong finish of a tied for 12th at 10-over par 226 (72-72-82).
“This was a lot of wind,” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen of the final day conditions. “But I’m proud of my team. They are a young team that again put ourselves in a position to win the tournament. They didn’t, but the more times we have the chance, we are going to come through. This is new to them and they are coming on so I am really proud of them. But you know they are learning something to. You know, we had some crazy numbers we never ever have. Their attitudes are tremendous so every single time we go out there we are trying to learn from and grow.”
In the long run, this could also be the type of day and wind they could face again later in the season.
“The more times they are there it is going to make them stronger,” she said. “They are disappointed they didn’t do what they wanted to do, but at the same token I’m proud of them. We are still stepping up and they are right on track to do well in the SEC and the NCAAs.”
LSU will conclude its spring season April 5-7 at the Rebel Intercollegiate at Ole Miss.
Tulane, besides the second place finish by Porras, also counted a 76 from Emily Penttila, a 77 from Madison Opfer and also an 80 from Gemma Dryburgh and Silvia Garces.
ULM finished in 13th place at 102-over 966 with Valentine Loge leading the Warhawks at 17-over 233.
