BATON ROUGE — Six LSU men’s swimmers are traveling to the University of Georgia’s Bulldog Last Chance Meet this weekend in an effort to bolster their positioning for a bid to the 2011 NCAA Championships in March.

The meet will be held Saturday and Sunday in the Gabrielsen Natatorium, and the prelims for each day will begin at 9 a.m. (CST).

Seniors Hannes Heyl, James Meyers and Eric Zeller, sophomores Andrei Tuomola and Craig Hamilton and freshman Michael Saco are making the trip.

“The men are really just looking to improve their times from the SEC Championships,” co-head coach David Geyer said. “Being at an earlier conference meet gives us the opportunity to go out and try to swim faster.

“You just never know in this sport what will get you into NCAA’s. They’ve looked great in the water all week, and we are all excited to see what they can do.”

In particular, the Tigers are looking to improve their times in the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays as those two events give the squad the best chance to qualify several swimmers to NCAA’s.

Hamilton, a distance freestyle specialist from Edinburgh, Scotland, is seeking a faster time in the 1650 free. His season best of 15:14.96 is six seconds off his school-record mark from a year ago that advanced him to the 2010 NCAA Championships.
