BATON ROUGE – Cody Trahan notched her 10th career double-digit strikeout effort, sitting down 11 batters over the course of five innings as the No. 16 LSU softball team knocked off Southern 6-0 Friday in a rain-shorted six-inning affair to open the Tiger Invitational.
The Tigers (9-4) have won seven of their last eight games and were led offensively by Allison Falcon, who enjoyed a breakout 3-for-3 performance. She also produced the first two RBIs of her LSU career.
Courtney Holler compiled her fourth consecutive multi-hit effort and also scored two runs. Kirsten Shortridge added two hits, a run and a stolen base.
Trahan limited to the Lady Jaguars (0-9) to a quartet of hits and maintained her flawless 0.00 ERA. She has yet to allow a run in 16.2 innings of work this season.
LSU received RBI-singles from Ashley Applegate and Jessica Mouse in the first two innings to grab a 2-0 advantage. The Tigers tacked on a pair of runs in the fourth inning to expend their lead 4-0 aided by RBI-singles from Falcon and Shortridge.
As the rain mounted, LSU platted two more runs with two outs in the fifth inning. Ashley Langoni drew a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and crossed the plate on a Hollier single to left field. Falcon belted a RBI-double for the final margin of 6-0.
Rachele Fico relieved Trahan in the circle for the sixth inning, but faced only one batter before umpires called the game due to heavy rains.
Jacksonville State claimed a 4-0 victory over Southern before falling to Houston 7-1 in other day one action of the Tiger Invitational. Play has been suspended for the rest of the day.
