BATON ROUGE — The LSU softball team rolled to a 12-1 win over LSU-Alexandria to open the second weekend of fall action Saturday at Tiger Park. The Tigers followed that up with a 2-0 victory over Chipola CC to improve their fall record to 5-0.
LSU cranked up the offense and struck for eight runs in the first inning against LSU-Alexandria. The Tigers sent 12 batters to the plate as Kirsten Shortridge, Ashley Applegate and Juliana Santos set the table for the heart of the order.
Ashley Langoni, Allison Falcon, Casey Faile and Lauren Houston belted consecutive RBI-singles to put LSU ahead 5-0. Two batters later, Courtney Hollier added a RBI-sacrifice fly. Katie Guillory tacked on a RBI-groundout, while Shortridge capped the frame with another RBI-single to make it 8-0.
LSU-Alexandria scored its lone run on a RBI-double in the second inning. Faile regrouped and retired the final seven batters she faced, three via the strikeout.
Jackie Victoriano added a RBI-grounded in the fifth inning before the Tigers scored three more runs in the sixth inning aided by a pair of wild pitches. Brittany Mack racked up six strikeouts over three innings to secure the 12-1 win.
LSU manufactured its two runs in the third inning against Chipola CC. Jessica Mouse drew a leadoff walk and moved to second base on a Hollier sacrifice bunt.
After a Lauren Capello walk, Shortidge ripped a RBI-single to right field as Capello advanced to third base. Victoriano pinch ran for Capello at third base and executed a double steal with Shortridge for the second run.
In the circle, Shortridge teamed with Rachele Fico for 12 strikeouts in a three-hit shutout. Fico recorded seven strikeouts, including the first six batters she faced over the final three innings.
LSU faces off against Chipola CC and Nicholls State Sunday at 10 a.m. and noon, respectively. Admission is free to Tiger Park.
