Former Swimmer Malberg Set for Olympics Debut

Five Swimmers to Represent LSU at NCAA Meet

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. — Five members of the LSU men’s swimming team are set to compete in the 2008 NCAA Championships that begin Thursday at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center.
 
Senior Miko Malberg, junior Christoph Lubenau, and freshmen Hannes Heyl, James Meyers and Brandon Selts will represent LSU at the meet.
 
Events begin at 2 p.m. CT Thursday with the 200-yard freestyle relay preliminaries followed by the 500 free, 200 individual medley, 50 free and 400 medley. Finals begin at 7 p.m. LSU will be represented in six events over the three-day meet.
 
The top-eight finishers in each event earn All-American honors, while those who place nine through 16 receive honorable mention All-American honors.
 
The Tigers will participate in the opening event with the 200 free relay team of Malberg, Heyl, Lubenau and Selts. The LSU squad is seeded 13th with the school record time of 1:18.85 it set at the Southeastern Conference Championships.
 
Malberg, who is making his third trip to the NCAAs, will also compete in the 50-free on Thursday. The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games participant is seeded 14th in the event with a time of 19.62 that he set at the SEC Championships.
 
Last season, Malberg placed 21st in the 50 free with a time of 19.69. The Tallinn, Estonia, native also competed in the 50 free as freshman in 2005 where he finished 32nd with a time of 19.83.
