COLUMBUS, Ohio — Sylvia Fowles scored a career-high 25 points and grabbed 16 rebounds and Seimone Augustus added 21 points to lead the third-ranked LSU women’s basketball team to a 64-48 victory over No. 4 Ohio State on Thursday night at the Value City Arena.
LSU (6-0) used a 13-0 run to break a 10-10 tie midway through the first half and closed out the half on a 23-5 run to lead 33-15 at the break.
The Lady Tigers, who snapped OSU’s (6-1) 21-game home court winning streak, built a 23-point lead before the Buckeyes used a 13-2 run to cut the lead to 12, but OSU could not get any closer.
“We established some things early for ourselves on the offensive end,” LSU head coach Pokey Chatman said. “But, more importantly we kept Ohio State off balance with some token pressure and did a good job in our zone defense.”
LSU held the Buckeyes to a season low 33.3 percent shootin! g and forced 15 turnovers. The Lady Tigers shot 52.7 percent from the floor, outrebounded OSU 38-30 and won the battle in the paint, 34 points to 20 for the Buckeyes.
“In preparation for this game we talk to this team about this game being won in the paint,” Chatman said. “We won the (points in the) paint 34-20, a 14-point differential and we win the game by 16 and it came in a multitude of ways.”
Fowles, playing against OSU’s All-American center Jessica Davenport, connected on 11 for 15 shots from the floor, blocked four shots and collected four steals in! the victory. On the defensive end, Fowles held Davenport to 14 points and five rebounds on five of 13 from the floor.
Brandie Hoskins added 13 points for OSU.
LSU opens Southeastern Conference play on Sunday in Lexington, Ky., with a battle against undefeated Kentucky at Noon CST in Memorial Coliseum.
