NEW ORLEANS — Jesse Smatt upset the Tulane Invitational’s top seed in the second round of the Singles “A” Flight on Friday to highlight the men’s tennis play on the first day of the tournament on Friday at the Goldring Tennis Stadium in New Orleans.
After receiving a first-round bye, Smatt upset Kristoph Stahlberg of Ole Miss, 7-6(3), 6-3, to advance to play Mikko Viljanen of Tulane in the quarterfinals.
Smatt and teammate Bryan Fisher also advanced to the quarterfinals of the doubles “A” flight with an 8-6 win over Viljanen and Kogan of Tulane. They will face UL-Lafayette’s team of Winning and Ilowski in the quarterfinal on Saturday.
In Flight “B” singles, four Tigers advanced to the quarterfinals and will be looking for an all-LSU semifinal set of matches on Saturday. Fisher, Anthony Mateljan, Brandon Nicholson and John Gray Pou all won his second round match after receiving first-round byes.
In Flight “B” doubles, Mateljan and Pou advanced to the quarterfinal with an 8-4 win over Vasovic-Darveau of Southeastern Louisiana.
Play continues through Sunday in New Orleans.
