#34 Glen Davis Season 2004-05

ALL-CENTURY TEAM MEMBER

Glen Davis was at his best during the Tigers’ 2006 season when he was named Southeastern Conference Player of the Year and a first-team All-American for the Wooden Award.

Davis starred as the Tigers captured the SEC regular-season championship with a 14-2 record and then went on to defeat four teams en route to the NCAA Final Four. LSU beat Iona in the opening round, rallying from a halftime deficit, and then used a three-pointer in the final seconds to defeat Texas A&M to advance to the regional semifinals.

There the Tiger magic and Davis’ personality was on display to the nation as he helped lead LSU to upsets over No. 1-ranked Duke and an overtime win over No. 9 Texas that got LSU to its first NCAA Final Four in 20 years. The Tigers jumped out on Texas early in overtime and when Davis came down on a break and shot a three-pointer that broke the Longhorns’ back, CBS Sports announcer Dick Enberg said with a question in his voice, “Glen Davis for 3? Oh my!”

Davis would earn all-region honors for his play in the NCAA Tournament in a year in which he led the SEC in both scoring (18.6) and rebounding (9.7). He would return to LSU for his junior season and despite injuries and intense pressure to perform, he still again led the league in rebounding (10.2) and earned SEC First-Team honors. He was a second round pick of the NBA’s Boston Celtics in the 2007 NBA Draft and became an NBA champion in his first year with the team.

NBA DRAFT
Selected in the second round (35th overall) by the Seattle Supersonics in NBA Draft 2007 … Traded to the Boston Celtics along with Ray Allen in exchange for Wally Szczerbiak, Delonte West and the draft rights to Jeff Green on June 28, 2007.

JUNIOR SEASON (2006-07)
Named to the final ballot of 22 for the Wooden All-American team and was consensus first-team All-SEC by the league coaches and voting AP media members … Davis was first team All-District 8 as chosen by the NABC and on the USBWA All-District team … Despite missing four games late in the season with a strained quad muscle, Davis will win the league rebounding title with an average of 10.4 boards a game … It will be the second straight year that Davis leads the league in boards, becoming the first to win the title in successive seasons since Erwin Dudley of Alabama won it in 2001-02-03 … He is the first player to average a double double at LSU since Jaime Lloreda in 2004 … Davis was third in the league in scoring at 17.7 points per game and in the top 10 in field goal percentage (48.4 percent) … Had a lead leading 15 double doubles including 10 in which he scored 20 points per more — At Tulane (1/2): 20 pts-13 reb; Texas A&M (12/5): 24 pts-10 reb; Texas (12/10): 21 pts-10 reb; At Oregon State (12/17): 22 pts-13 reb; Louisiana Tech (12/23): 23 pts, 14 reb; Wright State (12/27): 26 pts, 12 reb.; At Alabama (1/9): 24 pts-17 reb; At Mississippi State (2/3): 27 pts, 10 reb; At Ole Miss (2/14): 26 pts, 11 reb; Tennessee (3/8): 25 pts-15 reb …At this point in his career, has 44 double doubles and 29 games scoring 20 or more points this season … He is just one of five players in LSU history to block 100 career shots and is presently third all-time behind only Shaquille O’Neal (412) and Stromile Swift (130) with 110 bocks … Fifth in career free throw makes with 429 … Averaged 35.0 minutes per game, third in the SEC this year … Also led the league in offensive rebounds at 3.74 per game … Has played 95 career games, starting 93 … Had started every game since the second game of his freshman season until his injury, a span of 91 games … Against Arkansas (2/10) scored his 1,500 career points and finished the year with 1,587 points, 10th all-time at LSU … Against Tennessee (3/8) passed the 900 career rebound mark and finished the year with 916 rebounds, sixth all-time at LSU … Just the sixth player in LSU history to have 1,500 career points and 900 rebounds and just the second (along with Shaquille O’Neal) to have 1,500 career points, 900 rebounds and 100 blocked shots.

SOPHOMORE SEASON (2005-06)
Second-consecutive year an LSU player has earned the Freshman of the Year honor and then followed it up with a Player of the Year season … Finished the year averaging a league leading 18.6 points per game and a league best 9.7 rebounds per game … Davis becomes just the fifth player in the SEC since 1961 to lead the league in both scoring and rebounding since 1965 — Clyde Lee, Vanderbilt; 1977 — Bernard King, Tennessee; 1985 — Kenny Walker, Kentucky; 1991 — Shaquille O’Neal, LSU … He becomes the 10th LSU player to lead the league in scoring (a total of 18 times) since the SEC in 1933 … Davis made 49.5 percent of his field goal attempts (250-of-505), fourth best in the SEC … Davis also led the league in offensive rebounds at 4.03 a game … Had 14 20-plus point games this season and 18 games of 20 or more in his career … Scored career equaling 28 vs. Vanderbilt in the SEC Tournament (3/11) and against Kentucky (2/25) …. FRESHMAN SEASON (2004-05)
Gave LSU the freshman of the year for the third time in the Brady era and the second consecutive year (Torris Bright-2000, Brandon Bass-2003) … Started 29 games after coming off the bench in the season opener, averaging 29.2 minutes a game … Averaged 13.5 points per game, 8.8 rebounds and 1.4 blocks a game … Shot over 50 percent from the floor (51.3 percent, 138-of-269) and showed a good touch at the free throw line, making 69.8 percent (127-of-182) … Davis scored in double figures in 22 games and rebounded in double figures 12 times with 10 double doubles — Tulane (11-19, 16 pts, 13 reb), South Carolina (1-12, 28 pts, 14 reb.), Ohio State (1-15, 15 pts, 11 reb.), Arkansas (1-19, 26 pts, 18 reb.), Ole Miss (1-26, 13 pts, 10 reb.), Georgia (2-2, 12 pts, 11 reb.), Tennessee (2-5, 17 pts, 13 reb.), Alabama (2-21, 11 pts, 13 reb.) and Kentucky (3-12, 11 pts, 10 reb.) … Four games over 20 points highlighted by 28 against South Carolina (1-12), 27 vs. Southern Miss (12-18) and 26 against Arkansas (1-19) … Finished the season 15th in the league in scoring, second in rebounds and ninth in blocks … Finished third among the league freshman in scoring and first in rebounding … From the Utah game on Jan. 3 when Davis had just one rebound, the freshman’s rebound average went up two full points from 6.8 rpg to 8.8 rpg … His scoring average also went up two points from that game to the end of the season.

PRIOR TO LSU
Concentrated on basketball his senior season for coach Ari Fisher, but also had a stellar career at University High at tailback of the football team … Davis also tossed the shot for the U-High track team … Earned Parade and McDonald’s All-America honors, was named the Gatorade Player of the Year in the state of Louisiana, the Athlete of the Year as chosen by the Baton Rouge Advocate, Mr. Basketball by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association … He was also named the most valuable player in Class 2A as well as being named the MVP of the Top 28 Class 2A Tournament … Averaged 26.4 points and 14.3 rebounds a game along with four blocks.
