Thomas and Moreno advance to Round of 16 at ITA Fall Championships
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.—LSU men’s tennis junior Joey Thomas and sophomore Daniel Moreno continued their success from the ITA Southern Regionals by extending their four-match winning streak to five on day one of the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships Wednesday in Newport Beach, California.
Joey Thomas and Daniel Moreno were the second to last match of the night at The Beach Club at Newport Beach Country Club, taking on their opponent from Iowa.
Thomas and Moreno started the first set trading games, making it 1-1. The LSU duo took the next three of the next four games making it 5-2, but Iowa came back with two of their own leaving it at 5-4. Thomas and Moreno finished the first set off, winning it 6-4.
The second set started off LSU winning a quick game without dropping a point. With Iowa up 30-0, LSU came back and won the second game, making it 2-0. It was back-and-forth after that until it was 5-4 in favor of LSU. Thomas and Moreno finished the last game off just as they started the first, without dropping a point, winning the match 6-4, 6-4.
Thomas and Moreno went 22/35 on their first serve points and went 12/20 on their second serve points. They saved two break points and dominated on game points, winning 67% to Iowa’s 43%.
The LSU duo will face Baylor’s Constantin Frantzen and Sven Lah in the Round of 16 on Thursday.
