Women’s Basketball Makes Mid-Week Trek To Little Rock

BATON ROUGE – The LSU women’s basketball team heads out on the road for the first time in the 2019-20 season to take on Little Rock on Wednesday, November 13. Game time at the Jack Stephens Center is set for 6:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on the LSU Sports Radio Network and Cox Sports Television.

The Lady Tigers are 1-1 on the season after a tough 70-62 loss to No. 12 Florida State on Saturday at the PMAC. Junior Khayla Pointer scored a season-high 22 points, while senior Ayana Mitchell and junior Faustine Aifuwa chipped in with the 10 points each.

LSU continues to play solid defense and is holding opponents to 59.5 points per game early in the season.

Pointer is leading LSU with 15.5 points and 4.5 assists per game, while Mitchell, a Wooden Award and Naismith Trophy candidate, is averaging a double-double of 12.5 points and 11.0 rebounds to start the season.

With her nine boards against Florida State on Saturday, Mitchell moved to 12th on the LSU career rounds list with 746. Pointer is 21 steals away from the 200th of her career, while Aifuwa needs 12 blocks to hit 100 in a career. Against New Orleans earlier in the week, Pointer connected on her 500th career point and dished out her 200th career assist wearing the Purple and Gold.

LSU rookie Tiara Young made the most of her collegiate debut against New Orleans on Nov. 5. Young, a Shreveport native, started the game and became the first LSU player to come close to scoring 20 points in their collegiate debut since 2002. She ended up with 19 points, the closest anyone has come to matching another Louisiana native who scored 27 against Arizona in her collegiate debut in 2002, LSU legend and Baton Rouge native Seimone Augustus.

Little Rock is the preseason favorite to win the Sun Belt Conference after earning the leagues automatic bid with back-to-back tournament championship titles in 2018 and 2019. The Trojans are off to a 0-2 start after last week’s road swing through south Texas at Texas A&M and Rice.

LSU leads the series 5-1, including last year’s 60-45 win in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. The Tigers are 3-0 in Little Rock. This will be the seventh consecutive season that the teams have played each other.
