Women’s Basketball Hosts No. 12 Florida State Saturday

BATON ROUGE – The LSU women’s basketball team hosts No. 12 Florida State at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on Saturday, November 9 at 1 p.m.

The Lady Tigers are 1-0 on the season following Tuesday night’s season-opening victory over New Orleans, 83-49. The Seminoles are also 1-0 with a win over Charleston Southern on Tuesday night to start the 2019-20 season.

LSU will host a Military/First Responders Appreciation Day on Saturday. Members of the military and first responders can receive complimentary tickets for the member and their family with a valid military/staff ID. Tickets can be redeemed in person at the PMAC box office beginning at Noon on Saturday.

LSU started where it left off in 2018-29 with a strong scoring defense in Game One. The Tigers only allowed New Orleans to score 49 points in the opener. Last season LSU held teams under 50 points in a game seven times and under 60 20 times.

Ninth-year head coach Nikki Fargas was happy with the defensive performance, but was even more excited to see the offense that LSU was able to create against the Privateers.

Wooden Award and Naismith Trophy candidate Ayana Mitchell grabbed her first double-double of the season with 15 points and 13 rebounds, bringing her career total to 28. On her 12th point of the game, Mitchell became the 33rd Tiger to amass 1,000 points in her career. The senior from Conyers, Georgia, also moved up to 13th place on the LSU career rebounds list with 737.

LSU rookie Tiara Young made the most of her collegiate debut. Young, a Shreveport native, started the game and became the first LSU player to come close to scoring 20 points in their collegiate debut since 2002. She ended up with 19 points, the closest anyone has come to matching another Louisiana native who scored 27 against Arizona in her collegiate debut in 2002, LSU legend and Baton Rouge native Seimone Augustus.

Junior center Faustine Aifuwa scored 15 points in the opener, while junior point guard Khayla Pointer scored nine points and dished out three assists. Pointer’s ninth point of the game was the 500th of her LSU career, while her third assist was the 200th of her collegiate career.

Florida State opened the season with an 89-36 win over Charleston Southern in Tallahassee on Tuesday night. Senior Kiah Gillespie, named to the Wooden Award Preseason List this week, collected her 14th career double-double on Tuesday with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Head coach Sue Semrau is in her 23rd season at Florida State with a 430-249 record.

Last year’s game in Tallahassee was one for the ages as LSU pulled off the rare feat of holding an opponent scoreless in a quarter. For the first time in the quarter-format era, LSU held an opponent scoreless in a quarter on Nov. 18, 2018 at Florida State. The Lady Tigers were trailing the Seminoles, 17-13, with 1:01 left in the first quarter before going on a 22-0 run and keeping FSU scoreless in the second quarter. By the end of the first half, LSU had built an 18-point lead, 35-17. The third quarter started out quietly as the stingy Lady Tiger defense continued to hold off FSU for another 1:26. In total, LSU kept FSU from scoring for a consecutive 12 minutes and 27 seconds. The fewest points scored against LSU in a quarter had been 2, by Alabama in the 4th quarter on February 5, 2017.
