Basketball Player Will Reese "Tapped" For Mortar Board

BATON ROUGE – LSU men’s basketball player Will Reese had just finished one of Thursday’s group workout sessions with the Tigers and the players were huddling with Coach Will Wade.

But there was more to this end of session huddle than on normal occasions.

Dr. Randy Gurie representing Mortar Board and Mortar Board members Sarah Karam and Andrew Recatto, soon joined the huddle to continue the long-standing ceremony that initiated Reese into the prestigious group.

Mortar Board, Inc., is a national honor society that recognizes college students for their achievements in scholarship, leadership and service. It also provides opportunities for continued leadership development, promotes service to colleges and universities and encourages lifelong contributions to the global community.

Mortar Board was founded on Feb. 15, 1918 with chapters at four institutions: Cornell, Michigan, Ohio State and Swarthmore.

Reese was “tapped” on the head in the brief ceremony, a way that Mortar Board’s new members are told that they have been selected for membership.

“That was a surprise. I didn’t know that was going to happen,” said Reese after the ceremony as he was congratulated by his teammates who were in the practice gym at the time. “That was a great honor for (Mr. Gurie) to announce that in front of the team and I’m honored to be a part of the Mortar Board.”

Reese, who for two years has been a member of the All-SEC Academic Honor Roll, played baseball the last two-years before walking on to the basketball team prior to the 2018-19 season.
