Fournette, Alexander Named Walter Camp All-Americans

ATLANTA – LSU sophomore running back Leonard Fournette was honored as a Walter Camp First-Team All-American, while senior offensive tackle Vadal Alexander was selected as a Second-Team All-American, the Walter Camp Foundation announced Thursday at the ESPN College Football Awards Show.

Fournette, a native of New Orleans, becomes the 67th player in LSU history to earn First-Team All-America status, and he joins four other players in LSU history to earn the honor as a running back.

Billy Cannon (1958, 1959), Jerry Stovall (1962) and Charles Alexander (1977, 1978) earned first-team honors while listed as halfback. Jimmy Taylor (1957) earned first-team recognition at fullback. Kevin Faulk was named a First-Team All-American as a return specialist in 1996.

Fournette leads the nation in rushing by averaging 158.3 yards per game, and he currently has an LSU single-season record 1,741 rushing yards along with 18 rushing touchdowns heading into the bowl game.

Earlier this year, Fournette became the first running back in Southeastern Conference history to rush for 200 yards in three straight games. He needed only five games to reach 1,000 rushing yards for the season, also a first in SEC history. Fournette has been named national player of the week once this year and SEC Player of the Week three times.

Alexander, a four-year starter on the offensive line, has played more than 700 offensive snaps this season and posted more than 100 knockdown blocks while starting all 11 games (10 at right tackle and one at left tackle). He has helped pave the way up front for LSU to rank 10th nationally in rushing offense at 245.9 yards per game.

The Walter Camp All-America teams are selected by the head coaches and sports information directors of the 129 Football Bowl Subdivision schools and certified by Marcum LLP, a New Haven-based accounting firm.

This is the 126th edition of the Walter Camp All-America team – the nation’s oldest All-America team. Twenty-five players have been selected to the first team by the 129 Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors. In addition, 27 players, due to ties in the voting, have been selected to the Second Team.

The 2015 Walter Camp All-America team members will be honored at the organization’s national awards banquet on Saturday, January 16, 2016, at the Yale University Commons in New Haven.
