NICE, France — LSU tennis alumni Michael Venus of New Zealand paired with Mate Pavic of Croatia to win the Open de Nice Côte d’Azur doubles title on Saturday.

The duo broke on two of their five opportunities and saved five of the nine break points they faced to earn a close victory over Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau by a score of 7-6(4), 2-6, 10-8.

“It was a really good day,” said Venus. “For us to win our first title together, we are really excited. It is a great build up for next week going into the French Open. Hopefully we can continue playing well.”

The match marked Venus’ first ATP World Tour final event. Venus and Papic split 24,280 Euros in prize money and 250 Emirates ATP rankings points.
