CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Swedish freshman Madelene Sagstrom of LSU fired a 4-under par 68 to grab a share of the first-round lead in the Lady Tar Heel Invitational Friday a the UNC Finley Golf Course.
Sagstrom’s 68 helped pace the No. 3-ranked Lady Tigers to a tie for second with a four-under team round of 284 in the play five, count four scoring system. No. 4 Alabama, the defending champion, is the leader at seven-under par 281 with LSU tied at 284 with Wake Forest. Auburn is fourth at one-under 287.
Sagstrom, who tied for the second most birdies in the first round at sixth, is tied with Cheyenne Woods of Wake Forest and Katie Burnett of South Carolina. A total of 12 other golfers broke par on the opening day, including LSU’s Tessa Teachman as the Baton Rouge senior is tied for 10th at one-under 71.
Sophomore Austin Ernst of Seneca, S. C., had a solid opening round, posting even par 72, to tie for 16th and senior Jacqueline Hedwall of Sweden, returning to the team after caddying for her sister in the Solheim Cup, posted a one-over 73 to complete LSU’s counting opening round totals.
Tulane finished the first round in a tie for 10th at seven-over 295. Gemma Dryburgh is tied for 10th at one-under 71.
The second round is set for Saturday and LSU will be in the final wave off the front nine with Alabama and Wake Forest beginning at 9:30 a.m. CDT.
