WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Five LSU swimmers will represent the 25th-ranked Lady Tigers and go after All-America honors when they compete at the 2010 NCAA Women’s Championships, beginning Thursday at Purdue’s Boilermaker Aquatic Center.
Junior Jane Trepp, sophomores Mary Beck, Morgan McGee and Samantha Goates and freshman Amanda Kendall have made the trip, and the group is scheduled to swim four relays and eight individual events at the competition.
The meet, which will be held Thursday through Saturday, will begin each day with the preliminaries at 10 a.m. (CDT). The finals will start each day at 6 p.m. Links to live results and potential live video streaming can be accessed on www.LSUsports.net.
“I believe we have a strong, talented group of women, and I could see us making a big impact at the meet,” LSU head coach Adam Schmitt said. “Of course, we need to be at our best this weekend against some very tough opponents, but I think we will represent LSU proudly.”
Trepp, a three-time NCAA All-American in relay competition, leads the Lady Tigers into West Lafayette. The co-captain will aim to become an All-American in individual racing for the first time in her career as she is seeded in the top 16 in both the 50-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly with her school-record marks of 22.34 seconds and 52.73, respectively.
The Estonian is also seeded 24th in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.91) and will be one of the focal points on the women’s 200 and 400 free relays and 200 and 400 medley relays.
Beck is making her second career trip to NCAA’s and offers All-America potential in her individual events if she is on top of her game. The Austin, Texas, native is seeded No. 24 in the 200 individual medley (1:58.74) and will also swim the 100 and 200 backstroke along with relays.
McGee, Goates and Kendall earned their first career NCAA berths as all three qualified as members of the Lady Tigers’ 200 free relay team, which is seeded 12th (1:29.66).
McGee will also race in the 100 back and 100 fly, while Goates will swim the 100 free, and both should play roles on other relays. Kendall is expected to be a factor in several relays and will compete in the 50, 100 and 200 free.
Last season the Lady Tigers placed 16th overall at NCAA’s, their highest finish since 2001, and collected 12 All-America honors.
