Virginia Leads LSU Golf Classic; Lady Tigers Sixth

BATON ROUGE — Virginia fired a 1-under-par 287 to take over first place by eight shots Saturday as the second day of competition concluded at the LSU Golf Classic at a rain-soaked University Club. The LSU women’s golf team shot 9-over 297 and sits in sole possession of sixth place at 8-over-par overall.

Virginia is the only team in red figures following Saturday’s round that featured morning fog and steady rains throughout the day. Calle Nielson paced Virginia with a 1-under 71 and sits atop the individual leaderboard at 6-under 138 overall. Virginia’s Whitney Neuhauser posted the low round of the day with a 67 that tied for the tournament’s lowest round.

Wake Forest, who went into the day with a one shot lead, is in sole possession of second place at 4-over following an 8-over 296. Arkansas is two shots back in third at 6-over and Tulane and North Carolina are tied for fourth at 7-over. The Razorbacks fired the lowest team tally of the day with a 4-under 284.

LSU sits in sixth place at 8-over 584, but the Lady Tigers are just four shots off of second place. LSU shot 9-over 297 with a trio of 74s on Saturday from Jaqueline Hedwall, Amalie Valle and Caroline Martens. Hedwall enters Sunday’s final round in a tie for seventh at 2-under 142. She is one of nine players under par overall.

Valle is tied for 15th at 2-over 146, and Martens is in a seven-way tie for 28th at 4-over 148. Three other Lady Tigers are in a tie for 35th at 5-over 149, including Tessa Teachman, Nicole Crochet and Lindy LaBauve. LaBauve, who is playing as an individual, posted the Lady Tigers’ lowest score of the day with a 72.

Arkansas’ Lucy Nunn shot a 4-under 68 and is two shots off the pace set by Nielson. North Carolina’s Allie White is tied with Nunn for second following a 72 that puts her at 4-under 140. Five players are within three shots of the lead.

Sunday’s final round gets underway with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. CDT. Live scoring is available through www.golfstat.com. LSU will go off the third, fourth, fifth and sixth holes.
