BATON ROUGE — The No. 20 LSU softball team looks to continue its four-game winning streak Wednesday when it plays host to Southern Miss at the new Tiger Park.
LSU (10-4) returned to practice Tuesday for a two-hour workout after having Monday off. The Tigers also advanced in both Top 25 polls moving up to No. 20 in the NFCA and No. 23 in the USA Softball polls.
“It’s a wonderful chance to play in-front of our home crowd again before heading on the road this weekend,” head coach Yvette Girouard said. “Our pitching has been fine and our offense is starting to come around. We’re still looking to continue to fine tune some things before we head into SEC play.”
At the Purple & Gold Challenge last weekend, the LSU offense hit .354 as a team as Ashley Applegate, Jessica Mouse and Kirsten Shortridge combined for a 15-for-36 effort and eight RBIs en route to All-Tournament honors.
Brittany Mack has won four of her five decisions with 1.98 ERA and earned tournament MVP honors at the Easton Purple & Gold Challenge after tossing her first career no-hitter against Texas State. Cody Trahan is 1-0 with a 1.21 ERA and has held opponents to a .188 batting average.
Wednesday’s game will be the 22nd meeting between LSU and Southern Miss. The Tigers have won 17 of the 21 meetings, including 15 straight under Girouard.
“There is a long history between LSU and Southern Miss on the softball field,” Girouard said. “We have a lot of respect for their coach [Howard Dobson] and we know they are going to play extremely hard.”
First pitch against the Golden Eagles is slated for 6 p.m. with live stats available on LSUSports.net.
