BATON ROUGE — The LSU softball team had a busy fall semester by logging 173 hours of service stretched over 10 different events in the Baton Rouge community.
The Tigers tutored students at Westdale Heights and Airline Elementary Schools along with being involved with Keep Baton Rouge Beautiful Hurricane Trash Pickup downtown, Breast Cancer awareness activities, the Senior Olympics, the Sacred Heart Fall Fest and served food at a Mentally Challenged Christmas dance.
“The community service our team has done this fall is the least that we can do for our community,” sophomore outfielder Ashley Applegate said. “Tiffany Shaw and I did our best to organize as many service projects that would could and all of our teammates really responded. We enjoyed taking time giving back and showing how much we appreciate their support.”
The team also joined its fellow Tiger athletes at an ALS walk for Lou Geghrig’s Disease, the annual Halloween BOOzar, Big Buddy Program’s Evening of Champions and provided gifts for a child through the Christmas with the Tigers event.
LSU opens the 2009 season at the Paradise Softball Classic squaring off against Oklahoma, UAB and host Hawai`i from Feb. 5-7. The new Tiger Park opens against McNeese State on Feb. 11.
