BATON ROUGE — The LSU men’s swimming team wrapped up the 2007-08 season Saturday afternoon at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center.

The Tigers finished 29th in the final team standings, which marks the third time in Schmitt’s four years the Tigers have finished in the top 30.

The Tigers competed in the 100-yard freestyle event and the 400-yard freestyle relay on Saturday – the third and final day of the championships.

Freshman Hannes Heyl and senior Miko Malberg competed in the 100 free and finished 43rd (44.44) and 48th (44.68), respectfully.

In the 400-yard free relay, the LSU team of Heyl, Malberg, Christoph Lubenau and Brandon Selts hit the wall at 2:57.34 to finish 19th. Their time in the event is the fastest time an LSU team has captured in head coach Adam Schmitt‘s four years of leading the Tigers.

Overall, the Tigers captured honorable-mention All-American honors in three events during the NCAA Championships. Heyl was the highlight of LSU’s NCAA performance as he competed in three individual events and two relays and came out with honorable mention All-American honors in the 200-free relay and 100 fly.

Schmitt said LSU’s NCAA performance “bodes well” for the future of the program.

“We earned a number of All-American honors this trip and I thought our guys represented LSU well at the event,” Schmitt commented. “We continue to make progress and are getting more and more qualifiers at the NCAAs. Hannes in particular, had a great showing for a freshman and he is just one of many reasons why next year should be a lot of fun.”
