BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Three LSU players were cited for awards Tuesday as the voting of the league coaches for All-SEC honors was announced by the Southeastern Conference Office.
Junior guard Marcus Thornton, number two scorer in the SEC and within site of the all-time single season three-point mark at LSU, earned second-team All-SEC honors, while freshman forward Anthony Randolph was voted a unanimous selection on the league all-freshman team while defensive specialist Garrett Temple was named to the league’s all-defensive team.
Thornton enters the SEC tournament with a 19.7 points per game average, second in the league, after consecutive games of 36, 27 and 38 points. He has 17 games of 20 points or more and is averaging a league best 21.6 points in just the league games.
Randolph was one of the leading freshmen in four categories during the season finish fifth in scoring among freshman in the SEC at 15.4 points per game, while averaging 8.5 rebounds per game and 2.3 blocks per game. He led freshman in rebounds and blocked shots.
Temple ability to guard team’s best scorers earned recognition as one of the six members of the league’s all-defensive team.
Also Thornton was named Tuesday to the first-team District VII team as selected by the United States Basketball Writers Association.
