Women’s Tennis Plays Host to Ole Miss, Southern

BATON ROUGE — The LSU women’s team will end a seven match home stand this weekend as it welcomes Southeastern Conference opponents Ole Miss and Mississippi State, as well as in-state foe Southern to W.T. “Dub” Robinson Tennis Stadium on Friday and Sunday.

“We’re looking to get started with the SEC West this weekend with Ole Miss and Mississippi State. These are two teams that we know will fight,” LSU Assistant Coach Lisa Jackson said. “We have good rivalries with these teams.”

LSU finished play against SEC East foes, only able to muster one win as they upset No. 24 Tennessee in a 5-2 decision.

The Lady Tigers are coming off a tough weekend as they lost to No. 34 South Carolina in a tight 4-3 decision on Friday, and then fell to No. 2 Florida, 6-1, on Sunday.

“We definitely worked hard this week to bounce back from the weekend, and we are ready for tomorrow,” Jackson said.

LSU owns an 8-7 overall record; 1-5 in the SEC. Ole Miss leads the series against LSU by a score of 20-11, 14-4 since 1990. Ole Miss won the match last year at Oxford, 5-0.

The Lady Rebels currently hold a 4-12 record, 0-5 in the SEC. Senior Ilona Somers continues to be the lone constant for the Lady Rebels. The 2006 All-SEC honoree is ranked No. 97 with a 10-5 record at No. 1 singles, including 2-3 in the SEC.

Sophomore Megan Falcon leads the Lady Tigers, as she is undefeated in the No. 1 slot in dual play, 15-0. She owns a 25-2 overall record, 6-0 in the SEC.

Freshman Hannah Robinson will look to return to her winning ways as she had an eight match winning streak snapped against Florida’s Whitney Benik.

The Lady Tigers will make-up their match with Southern University immediately following the match against Ole Miss on Friday.

The match against the Lady Rebels will begin at 3 p.m. CT. The Southern match will follow putting the start time at approximately 7 p.m.

The Southern contest was previously scheduled for the opening match of the season Jan. 27, but rain forced it to be pushed back to this date.

Against Southern, the Lady Tigers lead 7-0 in the all-time series as LSU swept the Jaguars in the last meeting Jan. 29, 2006.
