BATON ROUGE — LSU junior forward Glen Davis was named preseason All-American by the Associated Press Tuesday on a team that featured three Southeastern Conference players.
Davis, a first-team Wooden All-American last season and a second-team AP All-American a year ago, joins Joakim Noah of Florida and Ronald Steele of Alabama in making first-team A-A. Tyler Hansbrough of North Carolina and Brandon Rush of Kansas round out the first five.
Davis (who led the SEC in scoring and rebounding a year ago to earn Player of the Year honors), Noah and Steele are all juniors, while Hansbrough and Rush are sophomores.
Hansbrough was named on 65 of the 72 media ballots, one more than Noah.
Steele received 55 votes, while Davis had 51 and Rush 26.
UCLA junior guard Arron Affalo was the next-leading vote-getter with 20.
Davis and the Tigers are coming off an NCAA Final Four season after finishing 27-9 overall and won the Southeastern Conference with a 14-2 record. LSU has won the Western Division title each of the last two seasons.
Davis and the Tigers open exhibition play on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center against EA Sports. Admission is $5 but fans can get in for just $1 by bringing a canned good to be donated for the Baton Rouge Food Bank.
The Tigers second exhibition game is Nov. 15 against Louisiana College and LSU opens the 2006-07 season against Nicholls State in the Maravich Center on Nov. 17.
