Softball Pitches Shutouts in Fall Classic

BATON ROUGE — The LSU softball team did not allow a run in two games in the 2006 Fall Collegiate Classic on Saturday, as the Tigers outscored their opponents 17-0 at Tiger Park.

LSU began with a 9-0 win over LSU-Eunice, before concluding play with an 8-0 win over Hinds Community College. The Tigers finished the fall schedule at 3-0 and did not allow a run while scoring 30 in three games.

In the first game against LSUE, LSU posted 12 hits, while allowing only three. Sophomore Dani Hofer started and threw six innings. She allowed two hits with an amazing 18 strikeouts, recording every out by way of the strikeout in the six innings she worked. Megan Jolly came on in relief in the sixth and allowed one hit in an inning of work.

At the plate, senior All-American Leslie Klein led the way with a 2-for-3 performance including a double and four RBIs. Five other Tigers recorded hits in the game, including junior Quinlan Duhon who posted a double, and juniors Andrea Smith and Shannon Stein and freshmen Jazmine Jackson and Rachel Mitchell who all recorded RBIs.

In the nightcap against Hinds CC, LSU had nine hits as a team, while allowing only two. Freshman Cody Trahan started in the circle. She allowed only one hit with 10 strikeouts in six innings. Jolly came in to close out the game and allowed one hit with a strikeout in the final inning.

A trio of Tigers recorded multiple-hit games at the plate. Klein again posted two hits, finishing 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Sophomore Killian Roessner went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Jackson was 2-for-2 with a walk. In addition, Stein recorded a triple in going 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI. Duhon and Vanessa Soto each went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

The 2007 season will begin with the Easton Tiger Classic on Feb. 9-11. The Tigers will host Centenary, McNeese State, Middle Tennessee State and Missouri in the three-day tournament at Tiger Park.
