BATON ROUGE — Seven members of the LSU track and field team were named to the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association’s (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team is was announced by the organization.
With recognition based on both academic and athletic standards, athletes must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or better and have met the NCAA Division I regional or national qualifying standard in his or her event to qualify.
LSU had four Tigers and three Lady Tigers receive the honors.
Leading the way for the men were sophomores Ryan Fontenot and Rabun Fox. Fontenot, an NCAA regional qualifier in the 110-meter hurdles, owns a near perfect 3.903 GPA in biology, while Fox, a regional qualifier and All-SEC performer in the hammer, carries a 3.825 GPA in kinesiology.
Juniors Isa Phillips and Austin Benton were also recognized on the men’s squad. Phillips earned a 3.320 GPA in political science and earned All-America honors in the 400-meter hurdles. Benton was a regional qualifier in the 400 meters and carries a 3.420 grade point average in general studies.
For the women, senior Megan Akre, sophomore Angel Boyd and freshman Anna Lyons were each recognized.
Akre, who graduated from LSU in May with a 3.621 GPA in marketing, was a two-time NCAA qualifier in the multi-events and the SEC pentathlon champion in 2006.
Boyd, a fellow marketing major who owns a 3.227 GPA, was a NCAA qualifier in the 100-meter hurdles after earning runner-up honors at the Mideast Regional Championships.
Lyons is undecided on her major, but earned a perfect 4.0 GPA. She was also a NCAA regional qualifier in the javelin.
