HONOLULU, Hawaii — The LSU Lady Tigers experience the sweet and bitter taste of college golf in the first day of the Dr. Donnis Thompson Classic here Tuesday.
After shooting a 10-over 294 in the opening round of the 54-hole event on the Kaneohe Klipper Course in the morning round and finding itself in second place just six shots of the lead set by Tennessee, the Lady Tigers found themselves unable to keep pace with the Lady Vols in the second round, shooting the second highest score of the round, to drop to fourth place, 36 shots out of Tennessee’s lead.
Tennessee shot equal rounds of 288 to stand at 576, eight over par on the modified Klipper course which played as a par 71 because weekend end rains forced the opening hole to be player as a par three on the normally par-72 course. The Lady Vols are 20 shots clear of New Mexico at 596 and Notre Dame at 603, before LSU (294-318 – 612), UTEP and Hawaii come in for the fourth place tie at 44-over.
Tennessee golfers are in the first three spots individually with Golda Johansson the leader at one-over 143.
The Lady Tigers, after counting no worse than a 74 in the opening round, had to count two rounds in the 80s in the afternoon session. The top 36-hole total for LSU is from freshman Caroline Martens with rounds of 73-78 — 151, nine over par in a tie for 18th place.
The final round is scheduled for Wednesday.
