SHREVEPORT, La. — LSU’s 11th-ranked gymnastics team returned to its winning ways on Sunday handily defeating in-state foe Centenary, 196.525-190.425, in the Gold Dome.
The score, the Tigers’ best on the road this season, marks their third straight over the 196.500 mark.
“The team just went in and competed hard today,” said LSU head coach D-D Breaux. “We didn’t have a single break until the very last performance of the day. Overall, we weren’t as sharp as were Friday but we still competed well and were able to get a quality road score that we have been needing.”
The Tigers sweep the individual honors for the third straight meet and the fourth time this season as junior Kelly Phelan captured her second all-around title of the year with a 39.250 effort.
Phelan also won the floor exercise crown, her fourth straight and fifth of the year, with an impressive 9.925 showing. April Burkholder and Terin Martinjak finished tied for second on the event with identical scores of 9.900.
Sophomore Lisa Rennie turned in one of her best performances of the season, capturing both the meet’s beam and bars titles. The 2005 All-America selection scored a season-high 9.900 in winning the beam crown and notched a 9.825 in earning top honors on the bars.
Rennie’s 9.900 on the beam anchored the Tigers’ lineup that tallied a season-high 49.125 on the event.
Nicki Butler, Emily Ellis and Burkholder, rounded out the Tigers’ individual honors as the trio all notched scores of 9.825 in sharing the vault crown.
Up next, the Tigers return to action this Friday when they host No. 4 Alabama in a dual meet at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center beginning at 7 p.m.
