BATON ROUGE — The LSU Tigers, on top of the men’s Southeastern Conference standings with a 4-0 record, will try to extend their 11-game league home winning streak Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center against the Georgia Bulldogs.
There is no television for the contest and the radio broadcast of the game will be available on the affiliates of the LSU Sports Radio Network (Eagle 98.1 FM in Baton Rouge) and in the “Geaux Zone powered by USAgencies” on LSUsports.net. Join Now!
The game will also be a “Retro Night” as fans will get a first look at the Pete Maravich era jerseys that LSU will wear in February during SEC Throwback Week and during the SEC Tournament. Also tickets for the game are on sale at a retro price of $6 at LSUsports.net. and beginning at 5:30 p.m. on game night at the ticket windows on the upper level of the Maravich Center. Students get into the game free with their valid LSU ID.
In addition, Coca-Cola products have been reduced to $1 for the night and the first 1,000 fans in the building Wednesday will receive LSU-logo slinky.
LSU fans will have a chance to win an iPod Nano. The fan who can guess the number of items in the Scion Tiger xB will be presented with an iPod Nano at halftime of the game.
The Tigers are 12-5 overall, 4-0 in the league and the last undefeated team remaining as the league enters the second quarter of its schedule. Georgia, continuing to improve forwardly under Coach Dennis Felton, is 12-6 on the year and 2-3 in the league. LSU downed Alabama at home Saturday afternoon, 68-57, in front of over 10,000 fans, the largest crowd in two years to see a men’s game at home. Georgia, in Athens Saturday, knocked Ole Miss out of the league unbeaten ranks by a score of 72-65.
“Georgia plays extremely hard, with good guard play and in college basketball if you have consistent good guard play you have a chance to win on most nights,” said LSU Coach John Brady. “Dennis (Felton) has done a good job with that, they know their strengths and their weaknesses and our team is going to have to play well on Wednesday.”
The Tigers will be looking for the strong play again from the perimeter where last week Darrel Mitchell hit seven threes in two games after going without a trey the week before. LSU got three treys from Tasmin Mitchell against Alabama and Garrett Temple, who has become one of the top defenders in the league as a freshman, is showing more and more scoring punch, posting 34 points in the four SEC wins.
Of course, inside Tyrus Thomas and Glen Davis continue to rack up the numbers. Thomas continues to lead the league in rebounds (10.2 rpg), shooting percentage (62 percent) and blocks average (3.5), while Davis is second in the league in scoring behind just Ronnie Brewer of Arkansas at 17.0 points per game.
After Wednesday’s game, the Tigers will go on the road and begin a pattern for the next few weeks of road games on Saturday and home games on Wednesdays. LSU travels to Oxford, Miss., this Saturday for a 2 p.m. game against the Ole Miss Rebels before returning home for a Feb. 1 game against Auburn at the Maravich Center.
