BATON ROUGE — LSU men’s tennis player Eric DeRoche continued his success in the 2005 fall season, notching two singles victories Friday at the Ragin’ Cajun Hibernia Bank Classic.
DeRoche, a sophomore walk-on, downed Vlad Paunic, of Southeastern, 6-3, 6-4 and cruised through second round play to reach the tournament’s semifinals. DeRoche is now four and one in the first five singles matches of his college career and has earned the attention of the Tiger coaches.
“Eric DeRoche continued to play well and continued to show us some skills,” said LSU assistant coach Mark Booras. “He’s playing very well and may earn a spot in our spring lineup.”
DeRoche will also compete in the A flight doubles semifinal round tomorrow. He and partner James Cluskey will face Robing Ley and Amanjot Singh, of ULL, at 2:30 p.m.
On the whole the Tigers struggled Friday. Coach Booras attributed a lot of the difficulties to the team receiving some tough draws.
“In these fall tournaments everyone gets lumped into one bracket and some of our six or seven seeds get lumped in with other teams’ three and fours,” said Booras. “I’m confident we will be ready when the spring comes.”
