Duo Falls in Opening Round, Squad Prepares for Texas A&M

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — LSU’s Ken Skupski and Mark Growcott lost close matches in Thursday’s opening round of the ITA All-American Tournament.

“We ran into some tough competition today,” said LSU associate head coach Mark Booras. “We basically got out-fought and out-competed in both singles and doubles.

Skupski fell to 14th-ranked Alex Slovic of Washington in singles. Skupski lost the first set, 6-3, but rebounded to take the second by the same score. He could not keep up in the third set and lost, 6-1.

Growcott and Skupski had a close match in doubles, but lost, 8-6 to Geoff Boyd and Brad Pomeroy of North Carolina. It was their first loss as a doubles team.

“Hopefully we can regain composure and fight through tomorrow,” Booras said.

The two begin doubles consolation play Friday at 8:30 a.m.

The rest of the men’s tennis team will begin action tomorrow in the Texas A&M Invitational. They take on Oklahoma tomorrow in the first of three hidden dual matches this weekend.
