MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Two LSU duos used easy wins in Saturday’s round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinals of the ITA-Wilson Southeast Regional Championships.
“We dominated in those last two matches,” said LSU head coach Jeff Brown. “We didn’t miss a lot of shots.”
Danny Bryan and Jason Hazley won their first match of the day, 8-5, over a pair from Vanderbilt. They later knocked off Ricardo Gonzales and Matic Omerzel, 8-2 to earn a spot in the next round.
“They picked up where they left off,” Brown said of the pair, which won their last tournament together.
Ken Skupski and Mark Growcott competed for the first time together Saturday and put together a solid debut. They survived a 9-7 scare in the round of 32 from Georgia State’s Jaime Rodriguez and Matic Sulin. In their afternoon match, they beat No. 59-ranked Josh Cohen and Eric Hechtman.
“It looks like they are going to be a solid team for us,” Brown said.
Hazley lost to Cohen in a morning singles match. He was the last remaining Tiger in the singles bracket.
“Jason ran into a tough opponent,” Brown said.
Skupski and Growcott face Georgia’s Strahinja Bobusic and Colin Purcell in the quarterfinals while Hazley and Bryan play Tennessee’s Ockie Oosthuizen and Ben Rogers. Semifinals will be played later Sunday.
