MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Only one Tiger remains in the singles draw at the ITA-Wilson Southeast Regional Championships, but several had big matches there on Friday.
Jason Hazley advanced with a 6-4, 7-6 win over Florida’s Jordan Dolberg to move into the round of 32. He will play Miami’s 76th-ranked Josh Cohen tomorrow at 10:30 a.m.
Four of the five Tigers competing in Friday morning’s first round won their matches. Kevin Dessauer won his third match of the tournament easily over Austin Peay’s Ankur Singla. Dessauer fell in the second round to seeded Vlad Obradovic of Florida.
Mark Growcott faced the tournament’s first seed in the second round after beating Southern Miss’ Chris Rea in the morning. Growcott won the first set against third-ranked Jesse Witten of Kentucky, but couldn’t hang on in the second two.
“Mark’s serve is huge,” Brown said. “Jesse did a good job to keep himself in the match with him serving so big. It was Mark’s best match so far, he just wasn’t able to get the win.”
Danny Bryan and Colt Gaston were also each 1-1 on the day. Bryan lost his second match in three sets to Matic Omerzel of Georgia and Gaston fell to Florida’s Greg Oullette. Both Oulette and Omerzel were seeded.
“Several of the guys played outstanding,” Brown said. “A lot of our guys are playing at a higher level and have put themselves in good positions.”
Gaston and Paul White were the only doubles team in action Friday. They fell, 8-6 to a pair from Vanderbilt.
Main draw doubles play begins tomorrow. Hazley and Bryan won the last tournament they competed in at Rice. Growcott and Ken Skupski will play together for the first time.
