Martinec’s Three School Records Highlights Day Three

ATHENS, Ga. — Senior All-American Evan Martinec continued his stellar performance in his final SEC Championship appearance as he shattered two more school records to lead the Tigers on day three at Georgia’s Gabrielsen Natatorium.

The Tacoma, Wash. native joined Christian Clausen, Neil Lowe and Ross Hebert to break the school record in the 200-yard medley relay (1:27.35). The group placed third with the “B” cut, while Auburn won the event with a pool record.

Martinec wasn’t done yet. Eight events later, he swam the fastest time in school history in the 200-yard backstroke (1:44.36), eclipsing Mattias Ohlin’s old mark (1:45.47 in 1999). Martinec recorded his third “B” cut time of the championships in a fifth-place finish.

The LSU men sit in seventh place, 204 points, with one day to go. The LSU women are currently in ninth with 172 points. Auburn continues its dominance, racking up 790 points on the men’s side, while the women have 634.

Friday’s events closed out with the 200-yard freestyle relay, and once again LSU achieved another NCAA “B” cut time. Martinec, Hebert, Lowe and Chris Stanczyk placed sixth with a time of 1:20.07.

Christian Clausen qualified with his second NCAA “B” cut time in as many days. The Trelleborg, Sweeden native finished fifth in the championship final of the 200- yard breaststroke (1:58.71). The time was the fourth-fastest mark in school history.

The day’s only diving event was the men’s platform competition. Andrew Keane (380.55) and Andy Crum (338.40) placed 12th and 15th, respectively, in the preliminary session. Auburn’s Caesar Garcia won the event with a score of 593.15.
